I love those penitente outfits. Don't know if they still do it, but up intil about two decades ago they had a version of them used in New Mexico. My great-grandfather was a penitente.

I like them, too. I am pretty sure that they still do that during Holy Week, that and many other things. They still do it in certain parts of Spain, too. In many parts of Central America they have preserved beautiful customs and costumes for Holy Week and pictures of that can be found on-line.

I'm glad you great-grandfather was a "Penitente." Thinking of starting a "Cofradía" like that in your area!? That would be a spectacular initiative!...

In Perú, they have a tradition in October ("El mes morado") during a procession of "El Señor de los Milagros." It is very beautiful, too.
